The Melanesian Spearhead Group–an intergovernmental organization composed of the four Melanesian states of Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, and the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front of New Caledonia–has called for a Pacific region wide moratorium on deep-sea mining, as well as agreeing to not allow underwater seabed mining to be carried out in their jurisdictions. They also called for a more rigorous and transparent environmental scientific research on seabed mining.
