The European Parliament has reiterated its call for a moratorium on destructive deep-sea mining. It is essential that the European Commission and member states carry this call through to the International Seabed Authority this year.

The European Parliament resolution on a sustainable blue economy in the EU stresses that the deep sea is home to the greatest diversity of species and ecosystems on earth, providing critical environmental goods and services, including long-term carbon sequestration. The resolution also notes that the deep sea is characterised by environmental conditions that make it highly vulnerable to human disturbance. In light of this, the Parliament has called on the Commission and Member States to support an international moratorium on deep seabed mining.
