While mercury occurs naturally in the environment, human industrial activities have rapidly increased the concentration of mercury in the world’s plants, animals, air, and seas.

Over 70% of our planet is covered by oceans, making the oceans the world’s largest collectors of mercury. Of all the mercury held by the ocean, nearly two-thirds sits in shallow waters – where most ocean life is found.
