The Constitutional Chamber in Costa Rica positively resolved the legal dispute presented by MarViva and five non-governmental organizations. With support of the artisanal fishers, the action resulted in the elimination of the renewal, reactivation, and granting of new licenses for shrimp trawling, in light of the damage caused to the marine environment by these activities and their negative effects on the artisanal sector.
The use of trawling nets to capture shrimp is now forbidden in Costa Rica, as the articles of the Fisheries Law that allowed it have been declared unconstitutional.
The suit was presented in July 2012, after four years of intense effort to inform citizens, public entities and decision makers. The campaign focused on the destructive impacts of bottom trawling on the habitats and ecosystems that sustain critical sources of natural heritage and employment for diverse industries, including artisanal fisheries, on which over 16,000 people depend.
