Getting active in support of a moratorium

Date: October 27, 2004

Oceana launched a cyberalert asking Spain to support a moratorium on high seas bottom trawling. Spain is one of the world’s most prolific bottom trawling nations in international waters and is opposing proposals for a moratorium.

Only the day before, Greenpeace delivered the first batch of a projected 100,000 postcards calling on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to work with States to establish a UN moratorium on high seas bottom trawling. The postcards were handed over at a meeting with Marta Mauras, Director, Executive Office of the Secretary General, who pledged to raise this with Kofi Annan. More than 17,000 responses have also been generated by Greenpeace cyberactivists to either their governments (Vote for Squid! cyberalert) or to the UN (Hey Kofi, Save This Squid alert). The squid has in fact become a bit of a star. S/he has appeared in ads in New Zealand, Spain and New York featuring as the pin-up of the Greenpeace seamounts campaign.

Send a letter to Spanish President Zapatero now!
