Jean-Michel Cousteau and his Ocean Futures Society (OFS) call on United Nations members to support a global moratorium on bottom trawling of the high seas.
Unless the United Nations and its members take action swiftly on pending resolutions for a moratorium on deep sea bottom trawling, devastating and irreversible damage will continue to erase one of the most vulnerable places on the planet.” Announcing that OFS has joined the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition, Cousteau said we must step forward and protect the ‘orphan ocean’ from the reckless plunder of marauding deep sea fishing trawlers. Seamounts and corals that have grown slowly for thousands of years are being crushed, with little thought for natural products locked in deep sea habitats that could cure human illness and instead are being lost forever.
